About the Var Region
The Var department can be split into 3 main areas.
Haut Var: The town of Aups is the capital of the Haut Var and is situated near the Ste Croix Lake (a huge and beautiful man-made lake-reservoir with pretty beaches) part of the Regional Park of the Verdon.
The Haut Var is a peaceful region with mountains, lakes, gorges, rivers, woodland, lavender fields as well as old picturesque village perched high in the hills.
The medieval village of Bareme, listed as one of the beautiful villages in France is the perfect example of these hill top villages with stone houses, chapels and cobbled streets oozing charm and beauty.
The area is well known for its honey, olive oil, wine and the black truffle.
The Haut Var offers a wide variety of outdoor activities such as fishing, swimming, rafting, paragliding, riding, cycling, and hiking and is ideal for peaceful but active holidays.
Centre Var: Between the Haut Var and the coast, this beautiful area features gentle rolling hills, vineyards, fragrant “pinedes” (pine forest), fruit orchards and boasts many pretty Provencal villages and market towns. Cotignac is one of the oldest and prettiest villages in the Centre Var and attracts a lot of visitors thanks to its charming Tuesday market and its summer antique markets.
The area is known for its wines, mainly rose and red. Wine tasting is available in many vineyards, so don’t miss it, it is usually a very pleasant experience.
There are daily markets all throughout the region where local produce (fruits, goat cheeses, olives, flowers, vegetable, honey, wine and much more) are sold.
The region offers many places of interest to visit (ancient chapels, medieval villages, castles, churches…) as well as many activities: Golf (St Endreol or Barbaroux for instance), horse riding, tennis, cycling and just a short drive away the Mediterranean coast with a wealth of water sports.
Coastal Var: 300kms of coastline (between Bandol and St Raphael) with beautiful sandy beaches, chic seaside resorts, deep blue sea and superb views .
This region boasts many famous seaside resorts such as Saint-Raphael, Frejus, Saint-Tropez, St Maxime, Bandol,, all with their own character, but all with superb environment, sun shine and charm. The Iles d’Hyeres just off the coast Porquerolles are also a very popular destination.
There again you will enjoy the local markets selling an array of local produce including freshly caught fish, olives, garlic, herbs, wines…
The coastal towns are very lively and offer a wide variety of shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, bars, casinos and nightlife.
