Area Information - Pyrenees Orientales: Languedoc Roussillon Region

"Best of both worlds: Mountains and Sea"...

About the Pyrenees Orientales Region

The Pyrenees Orientales is located in southern France; it is bordered by the Aude departement in the North, the Mediterranean Sea in the East and Spain in the South and is part of the Languedoc Roussillon region. Its capital is Perpignan.

The region offers a variety of landscapes: to the west the Pyrenees Mountains with peaks, forests, gorges and 3 river valleys (Agly, Tet and Tech) and to the east large plains leading to the Mediterranean coast with its beautiful long sandy beaches and seawater lagoons between Barcares and Argeles. Further south the coastline becomes rocky and is dotted with small beaches and rocky inlets.

The Pyrenees Orientales enjoys a warm and sunny climate throughout the year and is known to have more than 300 days of sunshine per year.

The Pyrenees Orientales has a varied and rich history with a great mix of culture and traditions. Once part of the Principality of Catalonia (Spain), the Pyrenees Orientales has retained its Catalan influence and pride: Catalan flag, Catalan language and Catalan cuisine.

A wide range of properties is available: coastal apartments, traditional village houses, stone mas, and modern villas.

The region is very popular with holiday makers thanks to its climate, relaxed lifestyle, its scenery (superb coastline and majestic mountains including the famous Mont Canigou), its culture, its cuisine and wine and last but not least its numerous beautiful historical towns and villages.

The region offers also a large selection of activities

  • Skiing is available in the Pyrenees (Font Romeu, Luchon) alongside horse riding or hiking. The Pyrenees gentle slopes are the perfect place for beginners to enjoy ski mountaineering and cross-country skiing.
  • Health spas: Great for relaxed and healthy breaks in stunning surroundings yet close to historic places.
