About the Region

This is a vast plateau region divided by the rivers Somme and Oise situated in the North of France between the departements of Pas de Calais and Seine Maritime. It comprises 3 departements: Oise, 60, Somme, 80 and Aisne, 2. The high population dropped due to the two wars and industrial changes.

Low industry except Amiens, main occupation is agriculture due to quality soils and ideal climate. Regional capital is Amiens, which is in the Somme, on the river banks of the river Somme, and it is halfway between Paris and Calais.

The town is home to one of the worlds most impressive cathedrals and the largest Gothic building in France, built in 1152 and then destroyed by lightning, rebuilding began in 1220 and lasted 25 years. It is listed with UNESCO. The tomb of Jules Verne is in the Madeleine cemetery.

You will find Picardy to be one of the most rewarding provinces in France. Picardie’s coastline is the least urbanised in all France with miles upon miles of beautiful sandy beaches and dunes. Great for windsurfing, land yachting, sailing, swimming and building castles. Expanses of oak and beech forests (largest in all Europe). Ideal for walking and cycling, choose between coastline and forests, vineyards (aoc vineyards of Champagne do stretch into southern Picardy).
