"A Beautiful region steeped in history and beautiful countryside in Languedoc Roussillon, yet with a very Provencal feel."...
About the Gard Region
This department is named after the Gard River and is situated in the Languedoc Roussillon, in the south of France. It offers varied scenery including to the south, the flat marshland and salt lakes of the Camargue with wild horses, bulls, and flamingos. Further inland in the Gard, are rolling vineyards with many picturesque winemaking villages. Further north, the Cevennes, a mountain range (highest point: Mont Aigoual) with deep valleys, winding rivers and forests.
The climate overall is Mediterranean but with 3 different tendencies:
Southern Gard: Hot summers and warm winters
Central Gard: Hot summers and mild winters with heavy rains in spring and autumn
Northern Gard: Hot summers but stormy, heavy rains in spring and autumn and snow in winter above 1200m altitude
The region is rich in history and boasts places of interest: Les Arenes (amphitheatre) and Maison Carree in Nimes, Le Pont du Gard (three-tiered Roman Aqueduct), the medieval walled town of Aigues Mortes and the charming medieval town of Uzes, to name a few.
With its coastline, mountains, rivers, canal and vineyard, the Gard region offers a wide range of activities including sailing, cycling, horse riding, water sports, rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, and wine tasting. Why not try some of the delicious regional cuisine such as tapenade (paste of olive, anchovies and garlic), the Brandade Morue (cod dish) and some of their beautiful seafood delicacies.
This attractive region is really worth a visit, it offers an extraordinary historic and cultural heritage of 550 listed buildings, beautiful and varied landscapes including some coastline, pretty villages with colourful markets selling local produce, good food and wines.
Anecdote: Were you aware that apparently denim comes from "serge de Nimes" which was a canvas cloth first produced in Nimes, France.
